The Great Brisbane Winter Flower Guide

What's Blooming This Winter (And Why It's One of Our Favourite Seasons)

If you think winter is a quiet time for flowers, we'd like to politely disagree.

In fact, winter is one of our favourite seasons at Lillipollen. While Brisbane might not experience icy mornings or snowfall, the cooler weather brings with it an incredible selection of fresh flowers that are full of colour, fragrance and personality. Better still? They often last longer in the vase thanks to the milder temperatures.

Every morning, we wander through the Brisbane Flower Market searching for the very best seasonal blooms. Here's what we're loving this winter.

Tulips – The Drama Queens

Tulips are a little bit unpredictable... and that's exactly why we love them.

Unlike most flowers, tulips continue to grow after they're arranged, stretching towards the light and changing shape every single day. No two arrangements ever stay exactly the same. Available in everything from creamy whites and buttery yellows to vibrant pinks and rich burgundy tones, they're one of winter's true superstars.

Hyacinths – Tiny Flowers, Huge Personality

If flowers had perfumes, hyacinths would be wearing designer fragrance. Their sweet perfume can fill an entire room, making them one of winter's most loved flowers. We love styling them simply in glass vessels where their beautiful stems become part of the arrangement. Fair warning: once you've had fresh hyacinths in your home, you'll eagerly await their return every winter.

Chrysanthemums – The Unsung Heroes

Poor chrysanthemums.

For years they've been unfairly overlooked, but modern varieties are absolutely spectacular. The fluffy pom-pom varieties are some of the happiest flowers you'll ever meet. Available in soft pastels, crisp whites and cheerful buttery yellows, they're incredibly long-lasting and add wonderful texture to arrangements. If you're looking for flowers that offer fantastic value and keep looking beautiful for days on end, chrysanthemums deserve a standing ovation.

Stock – Winter's Secret Fragrance

Stock doesn't always shout for attention.

Instead, it quietly fills your home with one of the most beautiful fragrances of the season. Its soft, romantic appearance pairs perfectly with roses, tulips and chrysanthemums, making it one of the flowers our florists reach for again and again. It's one of those flowers customers often fall in love with after smelling it for the first time.

Snapdragons – The Tall Storytellers

Snapdragons add height, movement and a touch of whimsy to our winter arrangements. They dance above the other flowers and create that relaxed, garden-inspired nostalgic look we love. They're also surprisingly long-lasting and available in beautiful soft whites, blush pinks, apricots and deeper jewel tones.

Oriental Lilies – Worth the Wait

If patience is a virtue, lilies are here to reward it. When they first arrive in your home, their buds may still be tightly closed. Over the following days they slowly unfurl into huge, fragrant blooms that often last well over a week. They're dramatic without trying too hard.

And yes… your whole house will smell amazing.

Why Winter Flowers Last Longer

Here's a little florist secret. Flowers generally love cool weather far more than they love Brisbane's summer humidity. Lower temperatures mean slower water loss, reduced stress and longer vase life, which means you'll often enjoy your flowers for even longer during winter. It's one of the reasons winter is such a wonderful time to treat yourself—or someone you love—to fresh flowers.

Bring a Little Winter Home

Whether you're drawn to fragrant hyacinths, playful tulips or long-lasting chrysanthemums, winter is bursting with beautiful seasonal flowers waiting to brighten your home.

Our florists hand-select fresh blooms every morning from the Brisbane Flower Market, creating seasonal bouquets and vase arrangements inspired by what's looking its absolute best that day.

So if your home feels like it needs a little lift this winter, we've got just the thing.

After all, winter is better with flowers.
