We’ve noticed a rather lovely little trend appearing in the Lillipollen inbox lately. The enquiry usually goes something like this:

“Hello! We’re getting married and would love a beautiful bridal bouquet and one buttonhole.”

That’s it. No fourteen bridesmaids. No floral arch the size of a small house. No arrangements for 27 guest tables, three bars, two bathrooms and a flower crown for the celebrant.

Just two people, a handful of their favourite humans—and some really beautiful flowers. And honestly? We’re completely here for it.

The rise of the beautifully small wedding

More Brisbane couples are choosing registry-office ceremonies, private elopements and intimate celebrations at their favourite restaurant or at one of the many unique venues in Brisbane that cater specifically to smaller weddings.

Sometimes it’s just the couple. Sometimes it’s close family and a few friends, followed by a fabulous lunch or dinner somewhere they love. The modern wedding checklist can be wonderfully brief:

1. Marry your favourite person.

2. Carry excellent flowers.

3. Go somewhere lovely for lunch.

No chair covers required.

For many couples, a smaller wedding feels more personal and relaxed. Instead of spending five minutes with each of their 150 guests, they can share the day properly with the people closest to them.

For some, that money would be better put towards a home, a honeymoon, travel, renovations—or simply beginning married life without a terrifying credit-card statement arriving at the end of the month.

Let’s begin with a small piece of honesty: there is probably no such thing as a completely stress-free wedding.

At some point, somebody will be late. Someone will ask where they’re sitting despite having walked directly past the seating chart. A distant relative will suddenly develop very strong opinions about chair covers.

Inspiration images are incredibly helpful. They show us the colours, mood, shape and overall feeling you love.

Problems arise when an image becomes a floral ransom note:

Twelve pale-pink peonies, three stems of café-au-lait dahlias and one perfectly curved branch of blossom—or the wedding is ruined.

Flowers are seasonal, natural and gloriously unpredictable. Some varieties are available for only a short period. Others may technically be available but arrive looking as though they’ve recently survived an unpleasant sea voyage.

A good florist won’t blindly follow a flower shopping list. They’ll understand what you love about the image and use the best seasonal flowers available to capture that feeling.

DIY wedding flowers always sound wonderfully simple.

You’ll visit the market, casually select armfuls of perfect blooms, arrange them over a glass of champagne and finish with plenty of time for a leisurely bath.

The reality may involve setting an alarm for 4am, desperately searching several supermarkets and flower wholesalers for the precise pink roses you had imagined, then discovering that flowers need to be cleaned, conditioned, arranged, transported and installed without being crushed, snapped or cooked in the back of somebody’s car.

All while you’re supposed to be getting married.

The Dahlia.

There’s a reason florists become slightly unhinged during dahlia season. One minute you’re calmly unpacking flowers… the next you’re emotionally attached to a dinner-plate-sized bloom named “Café au Lait” and rearranging your entire kitchen bench around it.

As the season slowly draws to a close, meet this month’s feature flower: the mighty Dahlia.

Originally native to Mexico, dahlias are famous for their wildly intricate petals, incredible colour range, and dramatic shapes — from perfectly neat pom-pom blooms to ruffled, frilly varieties that look like they’ve had a fabulous night out. They bloom through late summer and autumn, which makes them one of our absolute favourite seasonal flowers here in Brisbane.

And while they might look high-maintenance, dahlias are actually a little bit like that effortlessly stylish friend who “just threw this on.” Big impact. Minimal effort. Iconic behaviour.

One of the things we love most about working with dahlias at Lillipollen is that no two blooms are ever exactly the same. Some are soft and romantic, others are bold and spicy, and occasionally one arrives looking so perfect it genuinely feels rude to cut the stem.

We’re also very lucky to source beautiful locally grown dahlias from our friends at Redlands Fresh Flowers — a family-run flower farm in South East Queensland growing fresh flowers in the Redlands since 1991. Their dahlias are cut fresh from the farm and delivered straight to florists while still looking ridiculously vibrant and happy.

Current dahlia obsession at the studio? Rich burgundy tones, warm apricot shades, and those dreamy soft blush varieties that somehow make every arrangement look expensive.

Basically: if a flower could be both elegant and a little dramatic… it would be a dahlia. And honestly? We respect that.

Lillipollen loves ya Mum...

There’s something delightfully ironic about Mother’s Day. One day a year we collectively panic-buy candles, chocolates and flowers in a frantic attempt to thank the women who literally kept us alive long enough to become functioning adults. And honestly? Fair enough.

But Mother’s Day didn’t actually begin as a commercial flower frenzy (although we’d argue flowers are still the superior choice). The modern version of the holiday traces back to the early 1900s in the United States, when activist Anna Jarvis campaigned for an official day honouring mothers and maternal figures. By 1914, Mother’s Day had become an official celebration — and almost immediately, people began sending flowers as symbols of love, gratitude and appreciation.

Flowers have always played a huge role in Mother’s Day celebrations because they say the things many of us struggle to put into words. THE WARATAH

The bold form and eye-catching colour of the waratah ensures its place as one of the best-known Australian native flowers. This iconic beauty is most commonly found in deep crimson red and lesser-known cream and pink hues. The waratah is native to south-eastern parts of Australia including New South Wales, Victoria, and Tasmania, but is most common in the Sydney area of NSW.

The waratah plant generally grows to 3 metres in height and although it looks like one flower it is in fact made up of many flowers joined into a head ranging from 6-15cm in diameter on a thick, woody stem. These hardy blooms are in abundance every spring.

When choosing waratahs, look for blooms that are partly opened and coloured deep crimson. When the flower has a visible blue-tinge it is a sign they are expiring. Strip leaves off the lower part of the woody stem before cutting approximately 2cm off the ends on an angle using sharp secateurs. Immediately plunge into a vase of cool water, recutting the stems and changing the water every two days.
