Cymbidium Orchids: Brisbane's Winter Show-Offs

If winter had a signature flower, we'd nominate the Cymbidium orchid without hesitation.

Elegant, long-lasting and available in an incredible array of colours, Cymbidiums arrive just when Brisbane gardens are beginning to slow down for winter. Their tall arching stems and perfectly formed flowers have a way of making everything around them feel just a little more luxurious.

They've become one of our favourite seasonal flowers, and once you discover how easy they are to grow, we think you'll fall in love with them too.

A Little Orchid History

Cymbidium orchids have been cultivated for more than 2,000 years, with their origins tracing back to the cool mountain forests of China, Japan, the Himalayas and parts of Southeast Asia.

In ancient China they were treasured by scholars and poets, who admired not only their beauty but also their delicate fragrance. In fact, the famous philosopher Confucius is said to have compared the scent of orchids to the company of good friends—a rather lovely compliment for a flower.

Nature's Colour Palette

One of the joys of Cymbidiums is their astonishing range of colours.

Depending on the variety, you'll find blooms in:

  • Crisp white

  • Soft cream

  • Lemon and buttery yellow

  • Fresh lime green

  • Blush pink

  • Rich burgundy

  • Chocolate and bronze

  • Deep reds

  • Even unusual spotted and striped varieties

Every winter the flower markets become a treasure hunt as growers arrive with beautiful new colour combinations we've been eagerly waiting to see.

Why Cymbidiums Love Brisbane

Despite their exotic appearance, Cymbidium orchids are surprisingly well suited to Brisbane.

Unlike many tropical orchids that crave constant warmth, Cymbidiums actually need cooler nights during autumn to trigger their spectacular winter flowering.

Our mild winters provide just enough of that seasonal change without exposing them to harsh frosts, making Brisbane a wonderful place to grow them.

They're equally happy brightening a shaded courtyard, balcony or protected patio.

In other words...

They're far less high-maintenance than they look.

How to Keep Your Cymbidium Happy

The biggest mistake people make?

Being too kind.

Cymbidiums actually prefer a little neglect.

A few simple tips:

🌿 Bright filtered light is perfect. Morning sun is wonderful, but protect them from hot afternoon sun during summer.

💧 Water regularly while they're actively growing, but allow the potting mix to drain freely. They dislike wet feet.

🍃 Feed during spring and summer with an orchid fertiliser to encourage strong growth and plenty of flower spikes.

🌸 Once flowering has finished, simply remove the spent flower stem and let the plant quietly recharge for next year.

🪴 Resist the urge to repot too often. Cymbidiums actually enjoy being a little pot-bound.

Flowers That Keep Giving

As cut flowers, Cymbidiums are almost legendary.

Individual stems can often last three to six weeks in a vase, making them one of the longest-lasting flowers you'll find.

They're a favourite for elegant arrangements, weddings and corporate events because they continue looking fresh long after many other flowers have called it a day.

One stem can completely transform an arrangement.

Our Winter Favourite

Every year we look forward to seeing the first Cymbidiums arrive at the Brisbane Flower Market.

They're one of those flowers that never fail to stop us in our tracks.

Whether they're arranged simply in a beautiful vase, combined with seasonal winter flowers, or growing happily in a pot on your balcony, Cymbidiums are a wonderful reminder that winter might just be the most underrated season for flowers.

So next time you're visiting the studio, keep an eye out for them.

We have a feeling you'll leave wanting one.
